1969 Chevrolet Camaro "COPO" 9561 - 427, 4 speed.  VIN 124379N657861.  Engine #T0513MN

Description per documents found with the car, interviews with previous owners and data from previous auction sales.

A Well known and extensively documented COPO.  Possibly the only example known to exist in Olympic Gold exterior with Green Interior.

This 1969 Camaro, built in Norwood, Ohio, and originally delivered to Mr. Willard Clements in Toronto, Ontario, holds special significance. Unlike U.S.-delivered Chevys, GM of Canada meticulously recorded each vehicle’s details, and those records are still available. Consequently, we have factory documentation confirming that this Camaro was ordered as a COPO 9561 model, featuring the potent 427 cubic inch, 425 horsepower big block V-8, 4 speed transmission.

The Central Office Production Order (COPO) system, designed by Chevrolet, was initially intended to accommodate fleet orders for everyday vehicles like police cars and taxicabs. However, some forward-thinking dealers saw an opportunity to use this system to create high-performance, specialized vehicles that went beyond the capabilities of the standard Regular Production Option (RPO) offerings.

COPO 9561 was one such example. It equipped the Camaro with a 427/425hp big block V-8, surpassing the largest RPO engine available at the time, the L89 396/375hp big block. With only 822 units equipped with 4-speed transmissions and another 193 with automatics, this engine option was rare. COPO 9561 also included the ZL2 cowl induction hood, L78 air cleaner, heavy-duty springs, a 12-bolt Positraction rear axle with 4.1:1 gears, and a heavy-duty radiator, all while maintaining a low-key exterior that belied its racing prowess.

This particular Camaro is outfitted with the M21 close-ratio 4-speed gearbox, power disc brakes, and comes with a radio and heater. It features plain steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps and Firestone Wide Oval tires. Remarkably, it is believed to be the only COPO 9561 1969 Camaro finished in the distinctive color combination of Olympic Gold with a Dark Green vinyl interior.

Upon delivery of the car, the original owner, Mr. Willard Clements, decided to blueprint the engine and bored it .030 over to maximize displacement. He drag-raced the car, achieving impressive times in the high 11-second range at Indianapolis. Despite his racing activities, the car was spared from winter use and stored indoors, accumulating only 16,000 miles before he sold it in 1978. The second owner, Barry Allen, removed the original engine, substituting it with another 427 crate motor for daily use while keeping the original engine. In 1982, Allen completely restored the Camaro.  He added approximately 26,000 miles on it  before selling it to Tony Begley of Northern Illinois in 1999.   Begley promptly resold it to Steve Stange.

In July 2000 underwent some additional restoration items, including a new chambered exhaust system. Today, the car is in superb condition, exceeding its original state, and retains all the critical original components—engine, transmission, and rear axle.

The car was sold at auction by Bonham's in 2007 for $199,500 (according to their website).  A Chevrolet dealer owned the car for a short time before it was sold to Gene Young in 2013.  The car has been stored away in Mr Youngs climate controlled home garage ever since and has not been driven or shown.  It is in immaculate condition!

This Camaro is likely the most documented COPO Camaro available. It comes with the original Owner’s Protection Plan booklet with Protect-o-Plate, the original order sheet, bill of sale, Fisher Body Control Card, window sticker, resale certificate from War-Dan Auto Sales in Canada, and a certificate of authenticity from General Motors of Canada. Most documentation is housed in the original selling dealer’s customer folder, complete with a business card from Dave Mackay of Belmont Chev-Olds.

For a true collector, this Camaro represents the pinnacle of performance, quality, and historical documentation.
